Salty Dog Ranch: A Cozy Ranch Getaway In The Hill Country
The drive into Salty Dog Ranch feels like the kind of place you almost want to keep secret.
You wind through the Texas Hill Country outside of Round Mountain, pass fields and oak trees, and then suddenly you’re pulling onto 15 peaceful acres where the pace of life changes completely. The sunshine filters through massive trees, the air feels quieter, and within a few minutes of arriving, one of the donkeys was already following me around like we had been friends for years.
That’s the magic of Salty Dog Ranch.
The animals roam freely across the property, and they completely transform the experience of staying here. Bud, Sissy, and Gus the donkeys wander up to greet guests throughout the day. The goats, Missy and Leroy, along with their babies Charlie and Sampson, spend their time exploring the ranch and looking for treats from visitors. Then there are Doc and Dune Bug, the ranch’s gentle horses who add even more charm to the property.
The ranch includes treats for feeding the animals during your stay, which makes the entire experience feel immersive. You get to experience country life without any of the responsibility that normally comes with it.
One minute you’re sitting under the oak trees enjoying the sunshine, and the next minute a donkey is standing beside you waiting for attention.
It feels peaceful in a way that’s hard to explain until you experience it yourself.
Salty Dog Ranch opened in 2019 and is owned by Dana and her family. The property is veteran owned and offers veteran discounts, but more than anything, you can feel the care they’ve put into making this place warm and welcoming for guests.
The ranch has two separate stays on the property. The main house feels open, cozy, and comfortable with soaring A-frame ceilings, a dreamy kitchen, living room, laundry room, bathroom, and two queen beds. Sunlight pours through the windows during the day, and it’s the kind of kitchen that makes you want to slow down, cook breakfast, and stay awhile.
A few steps away sits the smaller bunkhouse cottage, which somehow manages to feel tiny and spacious at the same time. It has one queen bedroom, a surprisingly large bathroom, and the sweetest little tucked-away atmosphere surrounded by oak trees.
Outside, the property is built for relaxing and reconnecting with nature. There are grills for cooking outside, swings for kids, wide open space to explore, and peaceful sunset views across the ranch. There’s also a fenced-in area for your own dogs, so the property is incredibly pet friendly while still keeping your pets separate from the roaming farm animals when needed.
Everywhere you look there are little details that make the ranch feel special. Mustang grapes grow in the back field. An original windmill still stands on the property. There’s even a water trough filled with goldfish.
Nothing about the ranch feels rushed or overly polished. It feels authentic to the Texas Hill Country.
It’s the kind of place that reminds you to put your phone down for a while. To sit outside longer. To let the kids run around barefoot. To drink coffee slowly while goats wander nearby.
Salty Dog Ranch is available to rent through Airbnb and Vrbo and is also available for intimate weddings and small gatherings.
Whether you’re escaping the city for a weekend, bringing the family somewhere memorable, or simply wanting a quiet place to reset, this is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave.
And if you’re lucky, Gus the donkey might follow you around the entire time too.
